Large windows are a sought-after architectural feature; they allow us to interact with nature from the comfort of our homes. Here’s what I see when I look at windows in a space…
Windows are the eyes of our home and balance our living space with our natural surroundings, allowing Chi to flow freely. Opening the windows is a simple but powerful way to invite abundance. Maintaining windows by trimming foliage around them, ensuring they are in good working order and always keeping them clean further encourages the fortune they can bring. Washing windows is an important symbol of being able to “see things clearly,” which is crucial when determining what we want in our space.
The specific characteristics of windows, including size, shape, color and placement, determine what additional energy they hold for us.
Large windows offer a lot of Yang Fire energy and can sometimes be intense, bringing a large amount of energy in. This means larger windows in spaces we would like to be more Yin and zen should be have the ability to be covered. Much like closing our eyes when we rest, we need these to be closed to create a more restful space. For smaller windows, there is often a cozy vibe and much more Yin energy present. Encourage as much life as possible by maximizing the light from smaller windows.
When windows are placed across from an entry this can cause Chi to flow a bit too fast as it tries to exit out that beautiful back window quickly. This can prevent those in the space from being able to hold onto resources (making it hard to keep money or opportunities). There are a few design tricks I used to slow the Chi down in this type of situation. A runner at the entry way, a sheer linen window covering, a large plant placed in front of or just outside the widow, or a strategically placed piece of furniture can all help lead the energy in a new direction. The pictures below illustrate the difference in an open view and a calmer version using the tips above.
