High ceilings are something often coveted by the design community. They can create a breathtaking feeling in a large room (especially when paired with large windows - see my last post). All of this ability for movement brings lots of Yang energy - meaning there will usually be an active feel to the space. While this can be wonderful, it’s important to note that this energy may not suit every space or every person.
When considering ceiling height, I first assess the Yin Yang balance and what energy is needed for the particular place. Is it a place of rest or activity? A personal or public space? A space where feeling energized feels right or a it is place to be nurtured and quieted? Yang energy is brighter and comes through in rooms with high ceilings, while Yin energy is softer and often found in rooms with lower ceilings.
When I enter a room I can immediately sense the energy and mood of the room based on the elements present, such as ceiling height. When the Yin Yang balance does not reflect the energy the space ‘should’ give off (for example, a bedroom with high ceilings or a living space with lower ceilings) I consider what remedies could help balance out the space.
For high ceilings, I want to slow the Chi down, I often employ the Earth element to bring in more Yin energy. A square rug on the floor especially something with a lot of texture helps dampen the bouncing energy. In rooms with heigh ceilings, I think about the Chi moving just like the sound in the room. If it is echoing and you are able to hear things after they are spoken, this feels like the energy is multiplying, the Chi in the room is behaving similarly and may be moving too quickly. The same design elements that help dampen sound can help add Yin to the space, and bring just one voice to the room making the energy easier to manage her. Thus, Chi moves freely but not too quickly.

For lower ceilings where more activity is wanted I try to engage the room with more Yang energy. Invoking the Fire element can be great from lifting a space. Something bright, something warm, something to make you stop and take notice these items can bring life to a quieter more subdued space. A bright piece of art, uplighting, or an intentionally placed crystal and can help add to the allure and spark of the room.
There are always many considerations when designing around energy, ceiling height is just one. It’s always all about balance and the correct energy for the space and for those using it. I hope this helps you bring some balance to your home. If you're curious about the energy in your space and how to design your home to enhance what you want and lessen what you don't, I’m here to help!
