Hard and smooth surfaces, such as tile or wood flooring, will move Chi faster than softer surfaces. In general, we want to slow down the energy in our spaces, but we never want to stop it.
Certain spots almost always can benefit from a rug, such as the front entry of a home or a foyer, for example. Areas that tend to have more items or need more energy movement can benefit from hard flooring - like a creative art studio, for instance.
Hard flooring carries more Yang energy, while a carpeted space will usually feel much more Yin. When there are a lot of features in one direction (Yin or Yang), you can use the flooring to balance out the energy.
Flooring is also the foundation of any room - it covers a lot of space, so it will give off a lot of whatever energy it has. Ideally, a home should have a mix of harder and softer surfaces throughout to maintain balance. When in doubt, ask yourself if a space feels too sparse, as if energy is not able to be held there. If so, add a rug. Or, if a space feels a bit heavy or stagnant, try going with bare floors or a very low-pile carpet.
