When Lisa texted me in October asking for a little help with her front door, I already knew her house well. Its quirks, its calm spots, and the little touches she’d added to up the Shui factor.
We talked about this project on my First Friday Q&A live call last week… here’s a closer look at the visuals and the why behind my recommendations.
Homes, just like us, are always changing and evolving. What brought us to the threshold of a new project may be enough to see us through… or we may need an additional injection of Chi.
Lisa wanted to change up her front door. When we first met, I noticed she had two front doors — both painted red. We wanted to pull the energy toward the main one.
Yellow is one of her favorite colors, she wears it often and her brand identifies heavily with it - I chose a beautiful hue and came up with a plan to amp up her entry. Here’s the photo she sent me and the rendering I made based on my Shui recommendations:

My recommendations for Lisa
“Your front yard is lush and lovely, and there’s a nice meandering path to the door, BUT it’s a little hard for the eye to follow from the front.
I see you’ve added lighting along the way, which helps. My thoughts: more color, light, and interest at the door.
The wind chime is wonderful, and the Buddha is adorable, but his scale is a bit small so he doesn’t quite command attention. In your wet environment, colors can blend together; anything that really stands out makes a difference.”
My Suggestions
Paint the front door - a fun yellow-gold: bright but not sunshine. Use a shinier paint at least satin finish.
Ground the front door - a colorful door mat during the drier season would be awesome. I assume you need something rubber during the wetter months, spruce this area up as much as possible. Make sure it’s a mat you love, that its clean and fresh and as colorful as the season allows. A half circle will help bring more Metal energy too.
Add height - pedestals on each side of the door (or only the right if the left isn’t feasible), or hanging baskets, I know things grow beautifully with all the moisture! The height increases visibility of the door and also introduces Wood energy, which sucks up a bit of the extra Water… I love the Buddha as is give him a little home on a higher pedestal
Play with color - as much as feels right. Add swag to the front door (I mocked up something simple here but the more color the better) Swap flowers seasonally…
A new light - choose something brighter in brass or gold, and ideally something longer so it brings the bulb down closer to the door and brings light out and around instead of just down…
