Autumn feels like a deep breath after a bit of a struggle.
Easily my favorite time of year. We move out of the heat of Summer and simmer into the comfort of Fall…
There’s something inherently feminine about this time of year, and the season (and its essence) is represented in our homes in the Love and Relationships area (back right corner, from the front door… for those following along). That energy also flows through the woman at the heart of the home (many of you who are reading this…), which may be why this season can feel especially potent.
Days shorten as nights lengthen, temperatures cool. Leaves begin to fall, as everything is pulled back to the Earth. All feels settled.
Design doesn’t need to correlate to the time of year. I’m not pushing seasonal decor per se…
I love considering the feeling of a season and how to bring THAT into a room.
THAT which can only be felt, but can be conveyed through design, activity, travel, and the like.
This season feels like a cozy blanket and a book, like tea in a comfortable chair with a view, and like knowing where you’re headed.
Moving through life and through the world also brings us closer to certain elements. Each season in life and each place can bring us closer to a particular portion of the elemental cycle.
Earth feels like a visit back to yourself.
It is represented in adulthood, as we lean into life. We get comfortable with who we are…
Earth is the feeling of arriving somewhere and not needing to prove anything, of knowing you belong.
Times and places that seem to pull us inward. That is Earth energy.
Ancient stone cities, layers of history. Cities like Rome, Athens or Dubrovnik… places you can somehow understand before you’ve even set foot there.
Expansive views that welcome contemplation. Tuscany, Sedona, and even Ojai - the majesty of nature, especially this time of year.
We feel connected. To ourselves, to the land, and to others… as the veil thins, we can see all of this even more clearly.
So, this Autumn, let yourself settle in. Pull others closer. Cuddle.
